At St. Andrew’s, we want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. We are therefore committed to developing children’s curiosity about the subject, as well as an appreciation of the beauty and power of Mathematics in the wider world.
The aims of our Mathematics teaching at St. Andrew’s are aligned with the three core aims of the 2014 National Curriculum. This aims to ensure that all children can:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems
- Can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Our aim is to equip children with the skills and confidence they need to solve a range of problems by utilising mathematical reasoning and fluency with numbers.
In our Mathematics lessons at St. Andrew’s, mathematical talk and discussion are used to develop children’s understanding of the connections between real world examples, mathematically structured images and manipulatives, language and mathematical symbols. We believe that children develop deep understanding through building these connections.
